About Affirmative Consent (Only Yes means Yes!)
It's the law! We thank those who supported our shows for helping make HB151 a law in 2024 for college students in New Mexico. A good start! With ongoing awareness, we expect passage of K-12 consent education in 2025, critical in helping prevent violence against girls and women. Lila Quezada and other youth political activists at Girls Inc. of Santa Fe continue their many years of work with the Affirmative Consent Coalition to pass bills in the NM State Legislature.
Thank you to all performers and others who helped make the show happen, and for everyone's generosity and support of this fundraiser!
¡Time for Affirmative Consent! was a fundraiser with Silent Auction commemorating the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Nov 25. The fundraiser honored the Mirabal sisters (above), political activists murdered during the brutal Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic. Proceeds benefitted Girls Inc. of Santa Fe, Esperanza Shelter, Resolve, and the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW).
¡Time for Affirmative Consent! featured over 30 local artists in video, theatre, music, dance, poetry. Collaborators and performers included Conductor Jan Gaynor, Vocalist Alicia Solomon, Alexis Corbin, Executive Director KHFM, Political Activist/Actor Lila Quezada, Poet Beata Tsosie, Poets Mary McGinnis and Argos MacCallum, and Producer/Composer Valarie Morris, with many other fabulous talents, all working pro bono!
Performances: Nov 18, 19, 25, and 26, 2023, at 3 p.m. at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 1200 Old Pecos Trail, Santa Fe.
Audience Reviews of Nov 18 and 19, 2023 Shows
These powerful performance pieces intertwine, demonstrating determination and resilience transformed through music, movement, and writing to build strength, support, and policies out of grief, anger, and trauma. —Meredith Machen
The fundraising event ¡Time for Affirmative Consent! surprised me, as I was not expecting the power of those performances. I also did not expect that a topic like sexual violence would be faced so complexly through art. The passages from In the Time of the Butterflies, the poems, the dancing, the exquisite music created for the event, and the testimonies formed a multi-vocal discourse. The artists connected with the public truthfully. And the diversity of ages (including teenagers), timbres, and voices was awe-inspiring. I left the event different from how I entered. This work is important; it is necessary. Go see it! —Aileen El-Kadi
I was really affected by the show, and the courage it must take to participate in a performance on a difficult, personal subject. If I were speaking to a friend about the show, I would say: "Buckle up. This performance will work on you, and what you think you know, long after the show ends." —Dennis Kensil
The event was so well organized, the performers incredibly talented: their movements, their poetry, their stories all were emotionally engaging, and very sensitive. I was moved deeply by the entire show. —Faith Garfield
